Hello, and welcome to my page. My name is Michele Gibney and I am a senior at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. For my Honors Senior Thesis I decided to write about Japanese animation and how it is shaped by, and in turn shapes, Japanese culture. My thesis is divided into five parts: education, social and class differences, enviromentalism, post-nuclear visions, and an emergent femininism. For each of these sections I have drawn on one or two anime series/movies in order to illustrate my points. The vast majority of my research was conducted by reading books on Japanese society, culture, and history. I also did quite a bit of internet research.

So I gave my thesis presentation for the Honors program on March 8th, 2001 and it went really well. Or at least I was recognized by the Honors program last night as having one of the two best thesis presentations of the year. Which is nothing to scoff at in case you were thinking of doing so, because along with my little certificate saying how cool my presentation was, I received .

Thank you so much for visiting my page, and for desiring to learn more about Japan from this slightly knowledgeable person. ;P I hope that my writing inspires people to learn more or to gain a deeper apprecitaion for the "cartoons" of the East.

I would like to thank the people who organized the Carol Read Summer Research Grant, of which I was a recipient. Without this grant I could not have gotten much of my research materials, or have had the leisure to work on my thesis for the entire summer before my senior year. This grant was of invaluable assistance, and I will be forever grateful to them for the experiences I enjoyed last summer working as a Carol Read Scholar.
